Divas and Darlings - SAG Awards 2012

Red Carpet Fashion
Screen Actors Guild Awards 2012

All the glamour and gowns from the 18th Annual SAG Awards 2012 Red Carpet.

Biggest Trend - Braids
Kaley Cuoco enchanted in an aqua-mint confection by Romona Kerveza, with textured skirt and strapless draped bodice. TV Presenter Renee Bargh was beautiful in a purple lace and draped dress by Basil Soda. Ariel Winter looked delightful in a smokey grey Collette Dinnigan dress with beaded bustier and knee-length lace skirt. Dianna Agron was pretty in a deep pink Carolina Herrera gown with ruffle neck detailing. All ladies wore braided hairstyles.

The Scene Stealers
Emma Stone was perfection in Alexander McQueen. She chose a black tea-length dress with ruffled lace bustier neckline, pairing it with a McQueen clutch and floral adorned heels. Rose Byrne pioneered a new red carpet trend, wearing an ivory embellished Elie Saab jumpsuit, with plunge neck and wide-leg pants. Emily Blunt stood out in a revitalizing shade of vivid green, wearing a one-shouldered Oscar de la Renta gown.

 Black & White
Zoe Saldana opted for a white silk organza Givenchy Couture gown with crystal beading and a sheer netted top. Paz Vega looked glamourous in a glistening black and white gown. Although slightly bridal, I loved Judy Greer's angelic white Collette Dinnigan dress. Emilia Clarke donned Chanel, showing off accentuated shoulders and a black feathered skirt. Viola Davis put on a white strapless Marchesa gown with gold embroidered bodice.

Into The Blue
Jessica Chastain in a sapphire blue fitted corset gown by Calvin Klein. Jane Lynch chose a royal blue V-neck David Meister dress. Diane Lane wore a blue satin one-shouldered dress, which is also coincidentally by David Meister.

Glee Girls
Naya Rivera wore sparkly ice grey embellished Naeem Khan gown with deep plunge-neck. Jayma Mays dazzled in a black sequined Reem Acra gown, with the back covered in lace. Lea Michelle showed off some serious leg in a pale grey Versace dress with woven bodice.

Black Out
Amber Heard looked alluring in black silk-faille cut-out Zac Posen gown. The always elegant Angelina Jolie wore a fluid liquid-look Jenny Packham gown. Ashlee Simpson pleasantly surprised style critics in a beaded Jenny Packham dress with sheer capelet. Stacy Keibler was a safe bet in a lace off-the-shoulder Marchesa gown.

TV Presenters
Kelly Osbourne was refined in a cream Badgley Mischka gown with tassel belt and embroidered sleeves. Giuliana Rancic wore a red Basil Soda gown with alternating panels and a metallic belt. Maria Menounos flaunted her stunning figure in a form-fitting Dolce & Gabbana gown. Nancy O'Dell wore a fire-engine red tiered gown.

Too Much Champagne Makes  Everything Look The Same
If I see one more gown in this dull champagne shade, I will pass out from boredom. Julianna Marguiles wears Calvin Klein. Katrina Bowden in strapless lace Amsale. Kristen Wiig in a halter-neck Balenciaga gown. Sarah Hyland in an age-accelerating dress by Temperley London. Berenice Bejo was shimmery in Ralph Lauren. Yawn.

Berrylicious
Julie Bowen was beautiful in a magenta gown with split sleeves by Temperley London. Michelle Williams wore a strawberry red Valentino gown with asymmetrical hem and lace neckline. Natalie Portman looked gorgeous in a strapless plum silk-chiffon Giambattista Valli gown with large floral motif. Sofia Vergara stuns in raspberry gown with folded strapless bodice by Marchesa. Kyra Sedgewick was chic in a cherry red Emilio Pucci dress with cut-out back.

Shoe Art Imitates Life

I found this creative, shoe-tastic drawing while surfing the Net today. Each image depicts the designer's style so perfectly, with a whimsical spin. Based on just the designs, I'd like a pair of those Viktor & Rolf fantasy pink heels. I wonder how it would translate in reality?

Looks Of The Week - 28/01/12

A round-up of the weeks most notable looks.

Photo Ready
Diane Kruger turned heads at the 'Sidaction Gala Dinner' in Paris, wearing a gauzy grey lace Erdem dress with puffy shoulders and an asymmetrical mini underneath.
Jessica Alba was elegant in a black and white silk colour-blocked dress by Chanel Resort 2012. Her choice of accessories was exemplary, with Chanel jewellery and clutch bag, as well as black bow-trimmed Giuseppe Zanotti heels.
Cara Delevigne, who also attended the 'Sidaction Gala Dinner', was alluring in a beautifully draped emerald green Grecian gown. Bright violet pumps were her choice of footwear.
Black Lively sets off the peplum-skirt trend, in a white and black ensemble by Jason Wu. She paired it with sparkly leopard print pumps by Christian Louboutin.
Fearne Cotton posed at the National TV Awards in Britain, in a 20's inspired flapper look by Temperley London. Her silver-grey embellished and fringed dress was paired with a white Chanel bag, and colour in the form of red lips and heels.

Chic Street Style
Rachel Zoe looks 70's sleek in an abstract print top, brown jacket and flare bottomed dark denim jeans. She carries a Hermés Birkin bag.
Taylor Swift was adorable in a quirky cat-print dress by NW3 at Asos, teamed with a fitted black leather jacket by Rick Owens, brown crossbody bag, black tights and lace-up oxfords.
Katherine Heigl braved the New York cold looking casually chic in cream Max Mara coat, J Brand skinny jeans and a cozy beige wrap-around scarf. She matched her tan-edged coat with knee-high Christian Louboutin boots and a tan Rebecca Minkoff satchel.
Olivia Palermo was spotted at the Menswear 2012 Fashion Week in Milan. The reality star looked sophisticated in a white belted blouse worn with grey tailored trousers, a fur-trimmed coat and Mulberry animal print heels.

Trending Topic: Blazers
Jessica Alba features in another colour-blocked outfit, this time at the 'Good Day LA' talk show. The actress wore an oversized aqua blazer with a tangerine and black shirt dress.
Sarah Jessica Parker paired her navy blue velvet Yves Saint Laurent blazer with a sequined wavy-striped Tory Burch dress. A brown belt, VBH sling bag, Manolo Blahnik heels and Fred Leighton jewels complete her unique look.
Elizabeth Olsen attended the Chanel Couture 2012 show in Paris, tastefully dressed in a dark blue double-breasted Chanel blazer, worn over black skinny pants and boots. I admire her stylish simplicity with this look.
Alesha Dixon was snapped outside the 'Britain's Got talent' auditions. The show's newly appointed judge opted to wear a black suit blazer with a snazzy white crystal-gem embellished shirt and coral skirt. This is a cute outfit, but don't you think that she and Jessica Alba could have swopped shoes?

Sweet Spring Couture by Elie Saab

I know that the images from Elie Saab's phenomenal Spring 2012 Couture show will be posted on thousands of other blogs, but I couldn't help myself. It has left a lasting impression on me, with sensational gowns that are only imaginable in your wildest Midsummer's Night Dreams.

The maven of couture, Saab one again whets our fashion palates with a delectable array of dessert shaded designs, finely crafted with the utmost dexterity and impeccable detailing. Sheerness was a theme throughout, artfully ornamented by crystal floral appliqués and delicate hand beading. I've paired the designs with the sweet treats they remind me of. Enough from me, I'll let the dresses speak for themselves...they do so in volumes.

Sugar Cookies

Peppermint Tart

Bubblegum Milkshake

Candied Ginger

Peach Cobbler

Lemon Meringue

Paris Couture Fashion Week 2012

Paris Haute Couture Week 2012 officially opened it's doors on Monday to world class designers and stunning supermodels, displaying an array of exquisite clothes. This is an updated view of some of the most impressive collections. Click on the pictures for a larger view.

Versace
Donatella sent a small group of Glamazons down the Versace Haute Couture runway for the the first time in 8 years. Glistening dresses seemed to be moulded onto the models, with sculpted corsets, extended hip flounces and rounded strapless necklines. Subtle metallics paled in comparison to the striking shades of tangerine, yellow and lime. High pony tails and smokey eyes completed the glam-warrior looks. I wished for more pizazz, less shine.

Chanel
Azure skies to starry nights - every shade of blue was represented at Chanel's 2012 Couture showing. Models in faux mohawks and fascinators walked down the aisle, set to look like the inside of an airplane. Tweed dress suits in powder blue, drop-waists and pocket seamed shifts with high cuffed necks, a scattering of blue sequins that shimmered like the sun on an ocean wave. Longer length gowns were displayed in midnight blue and the palest shade of blue chiffon. A couture take on air hostess outfits - if only!

Giambattista Valli
The Giambattista Valli Couture show expressed sensual femininity: cream and black sheer lace dresses, petal-smothered skirts, sequins, satin and bows. I can picture someone like Olivia Palermo in the feathered frock, pictured second on the top row. Splashes of raspberry red, plum and fuchsia stole the scene with billowy evening gowns. Models wore elaborate floral headpieces, cohesively fitting in with the summery floral print gowns.

Christian Dior
Christian Dior's Haute Couture collection brings forth vintage-inspired shapes, from the swanky 50's to the more opulent Victorian era. A-line dresses were embroidered with floral designs, while pencil skirts were seen in houndstooth and grid prints. There was an interesting juxtaposition of 'heavy' sheerness. Layers and layers of see-through tulle were skillfully constructed into dramatic gowns with sizable skirts. Ruffles are certainly having a moment.

Armani Privé
Blue was to Chanel as green is to Armani this Couture season. Viridescent shades of green illuminated the striped catwalk, bringing with it chic reptilian-like jackets over mesh shirts and folded silk skirts. The under-the-sea extravaganza continued with a blinding neon gown rolled in sequins, graphic prints unfolded to reveal an inner black bodice, multi-layered mermaid gowns wrapped to resemble seaweed and a conspicuous shade of chartreuse which will ensure that this is an Armani range to be remembered.

Stephane Rolland
Stephane Rolland's Couture collection is one of my favourites from all featured in this post. Because he reimagined the basics, creating avant-garde designs and innovative silhouettes. Exaggerated origami-folds, geometric cut-outs, gold metal panelling, unfurling ruffles and architectural shapes. He chose to express these spectacular designs using a simple colour palette of black, white, red and lime green (which has been quite popular so far). Beautifully draped gowns swept the floor in silk jersey, gazar and organza. A masterful collection with an aura of confidence and allure.

Valentino
There was a feeling of regal antiquity surrounding Valentino's Spring Couture collection. If modern monarchy existed today as it did in the 18th century, I can imagine that this is what real-life princesses would wear. Prim white-to-ivory knee-length dresses, woven from the finest cotton and latticed lace. Feathery light floral frocks, demure as can be with high-frilled collars and sheer organza sleeves. A range that charms with it's maidenly grace.

Zuhair Murad
Zuhair Murad's Couture collection is 'glitzy as charged' for Spring 2012. Extravagantly beaded gowns were dipped in champagne golds and varnished metallics. Black floral embroidery was starkly contrasted with nude-tone slips, while hourglass-enhancing silhouettes were shaped to perfection. Crystal-embellished gowns featured plunging necklines and tails of tulle. It's luxury meets sensuality. I can see many a country-singing-star lapping this one up.

Taylor Swift Rocks in Rodarte for Vogue

Cover Girl Taylor Swift
Vogue US February 2012

There isn't a persona Taylor Swift can't play. She has portrayed many different types of characters in her music videos and for magazine shoots, proving that she is adaptable to any style. The 22-year old shows off her versatility once again in the February 2012 issue of Vogue magazine. Taylor is transformed into a 70's style Rock Star for the shoot, photographed by the legendary Mario Testino. Interestingly, Taylor wears focal pieces from US design label Rodarte throughout the editorial. It's almost as though this was intended as a campaign to promote the brand, with Taylor Swift as their ambassador.

On the cover, Taylor wears a purple and yellow hand-knit basket stitch Rodarte sweater with a camel coloured floppy felt hat. To the right, she wears a marigold and blue flower print paneled top, from Rodarte's Spring 2012 range.

A psychedelic background frames Taylor, who is dressed in a cream leather and wool trimmed jacket and hand-knit top from Rodarte's Fall 2009 collection, teamed with Rag & Bone tights and rose embroidered cowboy boots by Miu Miu.

Continuing with the seventies boho vibe, Taylor is decked out in a floaty navy and lime brushstroke print Rodarte dress, worn over Levi's jeans and Miu Miu boots. She dons a floppy Patricia Underwood hat, with Rayban's and a fringed Andrew Marc bag. I prefer her belted look compared to the one on the runway.

Even in black and white, this bronze beaded lamé leather 2009 Rodarte dress shimmers on Taylor. Her black thigh-high boots are by Michael Kors.

Taylor is hippie chic in an off-white embroidered prairie coat, paired with a marbled wool mini, both by Rodarte, once again. The look is styled with floral cowboy boots by Miu Miu and a tasseled Carlos Falchi bag. Don't you love her straight locks and new blunt fringe?

If this dress looks familiar, it's the same one Elle Fanning wore to the Critic's Choice Awards two weeks ago. This mint green Rodarte silk chiffon dress is imprinted with yellow sunflowers and has a sheer peasant style neckline. Taylor wears white cut-out boots by Jil Sander.

Do you think the focus of this photo shoot was to put Rodarte back on the fashion map, using the star power of Taylor Swift? Well, we can expect to see much more from the brand after this exclusive feature in Vogue.

Closet Confidential with Fabrizia Spinelli

This episode of Closet Confidential features the stunning and stylish Italian blogger Fabrizia Spinelli. Fabrizia has an eye for beautiful dresses, bold accessories and glorious pairs of high heels. Her blog answers the question every girl asks herself daily, Cosa mi metto or "What shall I wear?" She shares some of her personal style secrets and fashion favourites with us.

Describe your personal style
I like to dress pretty easily, without exaggeration. I don’t think I have a well defined way to dress, I like to experiment, to take inspiration from different styles, to change everyday and to combine different elements.

What has been your best fashion buy thus far?
It’s a really hard question, because every time I buy something, I fall in love with it...so...I don’t know, maybe my first Chanel. I had always desired it, and you know, Chanel bags are so chic, elegant and timeless.

What was your most outrageous purchase?
Maybe a bright orange lipstick. It was very long before colored lipsticks were fashionable, and also I haven’t ever worn make up in a strong way, so to me it was so strange and difficult to see myself in the mirror!!

If you could max out your credit card at any designer store, which one would it be?
Definitely the shoe department at Macy’s or Chanel

What are your key fashion pieces for Winter 2012?
A fur coat, many shiny and colorful lipsticks, a peplum dress, an asymmetrical skirt, a denim jacket and sparkling jewellery.

Who are your style icons?
I like the style of the It-girls Miroslava Duma and Olivia Palermo, and the elegance of Eva Longoria, but I also like to take inspiration from well-dressed ordinary people!

Three beauty products that you can't live without?
I can’t live without a mascara, blush and a good moisturizing cream!

What is on your fashion wish list?
So many things, of course a Hermes Kelly, a wonderful Chanel Jumbo bag in petrol blue, and a Moschino peplum dress.

What five items of clothing are the foundation of a good wardrobe?
A pair of jeans, a little black dress, a comfy pair of high heels, a black blazer and a great pair of sunnies.

Biggest Fashion Do
Wear what you like and don’t be afraid to show your personal style.

Biggest Fashion Don't
Don’t wear something just because it’s “in”, for the first thing you must feel good in it.

Fabulous Fashion Advice
Fashion is not only something to follow, but it’s also something to create, is something that can express our personality.

*Special Thanks to Fabrizia for participating in this interview and permitting me use of her photos.

Looks Of The Week - 21/01/12

With all the excitement of the Golden Globes this week, there were so many other interesting outfits that were overlooked. Here is the roundup.

Pretty & Poised
Rachel Bilson wore a vanilla mint frothy Chanel frock to the 'Art of Elysium' gala. It features an embellished bodice with full tulle and feather fringed skirt. This isn't a look that just anyone could pull off, but the 'Hart of Dixie' actress does so charmingly. She carried a cream clutch and wore satin Casadei pumps.
Rachel Zoe attended the Golden Globes After Party in one of her own designs, a glossy white and gold foil scallop print gown with ruffle cap-sleeves. A quilted gold clutch completed her impressive look.
Kirsten Dunst was graceful in a romantic embroidered black Valentino gown with sheer yoke and sleeves. I like that she turned the makeup up a notch for a change.
Kaley Cuoco is still on a fashion high since hosting last week's People Choice Awards. The blonde actress attended the Golden Globes After Party looking delightful in a silk and tulle white Zuhair Murad dress with tiered skirt and wide satin belt.

In The Navy
Navy dresses were also a hit on the red (actually blue) carpet this week.
Nicki Hilton looked glamourous in a midnight blue Giorgio Armani gown with asymmetrical sequined cut-out bodice and straight-fit skirt.
Emma Roberts caught my attention in a stunning silky blue Zac Posen gown, which has several cut-outs on the neckline and panel-frill skirt.
Stana Katic strikes the style iron once again in a Keven Hall design with strapless bodice and fully ruffled skirt. All these ladies graced the blue carpet at the InStyle Golden Globes After Party in Hollywood this week.

Creative Coats
It's a good week for Kirsten Dunst, who features twice on this list. She brightened up the Rodarte Dinner at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, in a chic mustard yellow Stella McCartney one-button blazer. She wore it over a prim ivory shirt, and gold and yellow printed brocade trousers, both by Rodarte. We can't see it well, but her heels are by Jimmy Choo.
Trendsetter Kate Moss looked fabulous in a faux fur leopard print jacket by Topshop, worn with an all-black ensemble and fringed scarf. Her black tie-up boots are by Balmain.
Jessica Alba brought her savvy style to the streets of New York, looking vibrant in a two-tone green-to-black Doo.ri coat, tangerine top and multi-shaded floral Erdem trousers. Her quirky colourful ensemble was complete with teal and white Barbara Bui sandals.

Friday Frills

Life has taught us that...
You can't be all things to all people.
You can't do all things at once.
You can't do all things equally well.
And you can't do all things better than everyone else.

So, you have to find out who you are, and be that.
You have to decide what comes first in your life, and do that.
You have to discover your strengths, and use them.
You have to learn not to compete with others,
Because no one else is in the contest of 'Being You'.

Then you will have learned to accept your own uniqueness.
You will have learned to set priorities and make decisions.
You will have learned to live with your limitations.
You will have learned to give yourself the respect that is due.

Dare To Believe that you are a wonderful, unique person.
That you are a once-in-all-history event.
That it's more than a right, it's your duty, to be who you are.
That life is not a problem to solve, but a gift to cherish.

Unknown, modified by me.

The Yellow Dress Trend

Trend of the Week
Yellow Dresses

Bright yellow dresses are an emerging trend that have been spreading sunshine all over the Spring/Summer 2012 runways. From New York to Milan Fashion Week, varying shades of yellow have been a favourite with designers.

Yellow is no longer just a daytime-summer-sundress type of colour. It has streamed over into formal wear, with elegant floor-length gowns in silky, flowing fabrics and sparkly embellishments. Yellow is a colour that suits most skin tones and hair colours, the trick is to find the right shade for you. Brighter yellows looked striking against darker skin tones and on brunettes. Soft, buttery shades flatter paler skins and blondes. If you're not keen on a fluorescent tint, try out a subtle lemonade shade.

Celebrities that Started the Yellow Trend

Yellow made a vibrant splash on the red carpet this past week. It's rare that we get to see starlets wear yellow evening gowns, but this year, it seems to be the Awards Season colour. You may recall seeing some of these looks.

Julia Kurbatova in a lemon one shouldered gown with hip flounce at the Golden Globes.
Charlize Theron looked graceful in a floral embroidered Stella McCartney ensemble.
Maria Menounos shimmers in a mustard yellow sequined Blumarine column gown.
Elizabeth Olsen wore an intricately beaded Emilio Pucci mini at the People's Choice Awards.
Mireille Enos in a vivid yellow beaded gown by Naeem Khan at the Golden Globe Awards.

Minka Kelly looked beautiful in a neon yellow Oscar de la Renta dress.
Yvonne Strahovski chose a simple silk chiffon daffodil gown by Jenni Kayne.
Camilla Belle stunned in a layered silk organza primrose yellow gown by Carolina Herrera.
Paula Patton at the Golden Globes in a sunflower strapless Monique Lhuillier gown.

Get With The Trend

Hop on board the yellow submarine, with these affordable and adorable dresses.

Are you For or Against the yellow dress trend?

Who Wore It Better - Awards Show Edition

Celebrities should know by now that Awards Season is the one time of year when they will be photographed the most and in the public eye. So wearing the same outfit as any other starlet during this short space of time should be carefully avoided. But on occasions when they don't, we have posts like these.

Who Wore Nina Ricci Better?
Left: British beauty Keira Knightley wore this black taffeta and lace Nina Ricci dress to the 'National Board of Review Awards' in New York on 10 January 2012. The dress has a sheer lace paneled bodice with ruched sides. Keira paired it with black tights, black Roger Vivier heels and a quilted black Chanel bag. She kept her hair in waves and wore a reddish lip colour and bright red nails.
Right: Tamara Mowry (from 90's sitcom Sister Sister) wore the dress just a day after Keira at the 'People's Choice Awards' on 11 January. She teamed the flirty black Resort 2012 dress with multi-strap black shoes. Tamara had her hair pulled back and wore large pearl earrings.

My Verdict: I prefer this dress on petite-framed Keira, and because she wore it with matching tights and heels, it gives the look more of a solidity.

Who Wore Paul Ka Better?
Left: Beth Behrs (from the sitcom Two Broke Girls) wore a Paul Ka dress to the 'HBO Golden Globes After Party' on Sunday, 15 January. Her pale shell pink mini has an asymmetrical frill down the bodice. She paired it with gold Giuseppe Zanotti peep toe heels, a sparkly gold clutch and soaring beehive hairdo.
Right: Selena Gomez was the first to wear the dainty dress, last year already at the 2011 'People's Choice Awards' on 5 January 2011. I'm presuming that Beth didn't watch the show. Selena looked pretty pairing it with nude heels by Giuseppe Zanotti, incidentally, and a black clutch. She had her to the side in cascading waves.

My Verdict: Selena 100%. Beth's space-age hair ruined it for me. I liked how Selena's hair mirrored the frill on her dress.

Who Wore Valentino Better?

Left: We just saw Stana Katic at the 'People's Choice Awards' last week (11 January) in a slinky black V-neck Valentino gown. The Castle actress looked stunning in this figure-fitting dress with gathered front and sported side-swept waves.
Right: Ali Larter wore the white version of the dress 3 days later at the 'Art of Elysium Heaven' event in Hollywood. She added turquoise earrings and wore a sleek straight bob.

My Verdict: Although the knotted front detail was more visible on the white gown, I have to go with Stana, simply because the dress fit her impeccably well.

I would love to hear your verdicts:

1. Keira or Tamara?
2. Beth or Selena?
3. Stana or Ali?
